Phases of viruses

Viruses have two phases to their existence

  1. Inside their host cells where they exhibit certain living characteristics.
  2. outside their host where they appear as discrete particles, and can be considered non-living. You can thus see that viruses exist on the borderline between living and non-living things. They show living traits when present within the host cell; out of the living host cell they are just like any other non-living particle.
