Perhaps the most important thing a leader does is to communicate. Mastering communication is critical to successful leadership. The purpose of this assignment is to help you identify and practice effective verbal communication skills.

Imagine you are CEO of a company with ten senior managers. You have decided that your company should share its management expertise to enhance the local community as a form of corporate social responsibility. Referring to the information in the PowerPoint presentation on leadership communication (especially the first nine slides), write a two to three paragraph essay to convince your managers that they should each volunteer their time to the local community by serving as a member of the board of directors for a local nonprofit organization. Make use of as many of the rhetorical tools as you can without seeming contrived. Identify these rhetorical tools as you use them. Name the rhetorical tool in parentheses.

Rhetorical Tools:

1. Three Breathless Sentences (e.g. "government of the people, by the people, for the people"; "one people, one empire, one leader"; "eat well, laugh often, love much"

2. Three Repetitive Sentences (e.g. "we shall fight in the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight on the fields & the streets")

3. Balancing Statements (e.g. "there's nothing wrong with America, that can't be cured by what is right by America", "to be or not to be")

4. Metaphor (e.g. "The Arab Spring", "The Financial Storm")

5. Exaggeration (e.g. "My God, I've been waiting to give this talk my whole life"; "There are literally tons of opportunities for you to volunteer")

6. Rhyme (e.g."one, two, buckle my show")
