Choose a developing country anywhere in the world with a well-established Tourism sector.

As an independent international consultant, you have been asked to assess indicators for sustainable tourism development of your chosen country and to make some recommendations for future development of this tourist destination. As a specialist in the area of Tourism development, you have ideas for your investigation:

Using relevant internet sites and variety of sources of information assess the tourism resources and attractions, including tourism infrastructure, access to the destination, currency used at the destination, tourism products and services available and facilities to deliver these products with a view of finding potentials for further development.

Explore where tourists are typically accommodated, how long do they stay at the destination, and how much do they spend in in average. Is there any chance to encourage them to stay longer and to spend more money at the destination? Explore traditional industries of a chosen country. How they can be utilised into the process of tourism development? Explore local gastronomy, architecture, language(s) spoken at the destination and other aspects of local culture, such as songs, dances, festivals and religious ceremonies. Whether visitors are invited to observe them? How culture can be enhanced with tourism development? Explore local flora and fauna of this destination, places of natural beauty, type of climate and find further opportunities to maximise benefits from tourism development and minimise detrimental impacts from tourism development.

Finally, pay attention to the government policy on tourism development and what the country is trying to achieve through tourism development. Do not ignore the sustainability of tourism resources and the limitation or barriers to developing tourism in your chosen country.

What you must do:

You will need to summarise your findings and recommendations into a report based on the five assignment task given below. All your answers should be focused on the case study scenario whenever possible.

Task 1 -

1.1 Identify the tourism stakeholders in the chosen country and discuss how the different stakeholders would benefit from planning of tourism developments with reference to the chosen country.

1.2 Discuss how public-private sector partnerships in tourism planning and development would work in the chosen destination emphasising on the advantages and disadvantages of such partnerships.

Demonstrate effective approach to study and research the public-private partnership arrangement in tourism development.

Task 2 -

2.1 Outline the key steps of tourism development planning process and analyse the features at different levels such as local authority and national levels using your case study destination.

2.2 Explain interactive planning and evaluate the significance of interactive planning systems and processes in tourism development in the chosen destination.

2.3 Explain tourism impacts and evaluate a range of methods to measure those impacts (consider all three impacts such as economic, social and environmental)

Relevant theories and techniques are applied in explaining, analysing and measuring tourism impacts in the case study destination.

Conclusion on the significance of interactive planning in tourism development at different level are drawn through synthesis of ideas with justification.

Task 3 -

3.1 Explain sustainability in tourism development and justify the introduction of the concept in planning for sustainable tourism development in the chosen country.

3.2 Discuss why sustainability is an issue and analyse the factors that may prevent/hinder sustainable tourism development your chosen country.

3.3 Identify and analyse the various stage of sustainable tourism development planning with example drawn from the case study destination.

A range of sources of information has been used to analyse the factors that may prevent/hinder sustainable tourism development.

Plan, manage and organise substantial activities and research in carrying out this task.

Task 4 -

4.1 Examine the issues of conflict of interests and evaluate the methods of resolving a conflict of interests to ensure the future wellbeing of a developing tourism destination. Use examples from your case study destination.

4.2 Sustainability also means achieving a balance. Analyse the implications of balancing supply and demand in your chosen destination.

4.3 What is meant by Enclave Tourism? Evaluate the moral and ethical issues of developing and promoting enclave tourism with examples.

Being able to be receptive and impartial to new ideas of resolving conflict of interest in developing sustainable tourism.

Task 5 -

5.1 Compare current issues associated with tourism development in your chosen destination and an emerging destination of your choice where the impacts of tourism are different.

5.2 Evaluate, with recommendations, the future development of tourism in both destinations.

On the proposed class presentation of task 5.1, appropriate methods of communication used effectively.

Applied effective thinking and show evidence of receptiveness to new ideas and originality in recommending.
