Patient reports that they may have been exposed to syphilis

Question: A 38-year-old patient reports that they may have been exposed to syphilis. The patient was treated for syphilis 4 years ago. The nurse practitioner knows that: • A - a T. pallidum enzyme immunoassay (TP-EIA) is a qualitative test and will determine if she has been reinfected. • B - a fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) test will confirm a diagnosis of syphilis in this patient. • c - there is no need to retest the patient; she should be treated empirically. • D - a rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test will provide a semiquantitative result, and a fourfold increase may indicate a new infection.
