To what degree is this version "fictional," that is, the result of Nathan's deciding (imagining, dreaming, etc.) what might the reasons for the conflict he experiences with Merry? What episodes does Nathan create in order to demonstrate the difficulties Swede supposedly has in dealing with his daughter's affection and disobedience? How does Nathan make Swede's experiences connect with the history of American culture from World War II until the seventies?
