Development programs allow for employees to build on skills and in many cases to further their career with their organization. It can also help build a more positive culture within an organization. At a previous employer I was required to participate in a minimum of 40 hours a year of professional development activities, it was up to employees to choose from a number of courses that would count towards these professional development hours and ranged anywhere from instructor-led courses on Microsoft Office, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and many more. Does your current employer, or any other organization you're familiar with offer these types of opportunities?
