Paper Topic = Euthanasia/Physician Assisted Suicide
Individuals who make the choice to end their lives legally with the assistance of a physician are engaging in euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide. This practice is illegal in much of the United States but there are some states in which it is legal and other states have attempted to legalize it. What states have legalized physician assisted suicide laws and what other countries in the world also allow this?How does the USA compare to the rest of the world in our views and legality of euthanasia? Describe the practice as it's defined by law in one or more states/countries. For instance, what guidelines are in place to define the practice (e.g. Does the person have to be dying within a few months' time or can they have a longer prognosis to live, such as a year or two, and still be eligible? What is the age at which a person is allowed to make this decision)?
Last year, a young woman named Brittany Maynard publically shared her struggle with cancer and the decision to move to Oregon with her family where she ended her life legally with the assistance of a physician. What are your thoughts about this practice? Do you think more states in the USA and/or other countries should consider legalizing this practice?
