Overall, I think all of the theories together explain the collapse of the Soviet Union, but for the sake of argument, I will suggest that the "Defective System" theory accurately points to the primary cause for the demise of the Soviet Union. The Soviet economy was owned and controlled by the central government, not encouraging or allowing for innovation and advancement of technologies to help create new sectors of employment and economic growth.
