Purpose of Assignment:

To identify, evaluate, and develop strategies for addressing the risks and hazards associated with outdoor recreational programming in their chosen activity. Students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the planning process and specific risk management issues including hazard identification and the development of appropriate procedures for managing risks in an outdoor environment.

General Description of Assignment:

Plan and describe, in detail, a unique outdoor program. This program must take place outdoors and must include at least two full days worth of organized activities. Students are encouraged to select a population (participants) and activities that are professionally relevant if at all possible. This must be practical, and based on current reality (i.e. no trips to the moon).

Project Requirements:

• Itinerary/Detailed Schedule - including specific routes/distances to be travelled each day.

• Equipment lists - group & individual

• Menu & Description of water sources/methods for purification

• Weather Info - average temperatures. Weather patterns, sunrise/sunset times, Water levels/conditions if applicable.

• Transportation - driving directions for all parts of trip including routes to closest hospitals and evacuation routes/options.

• Rules/Regulations

• Risk Assessment & Management - identification of specific risks and hazards, likelihood, severity and possible damages or injuries, pre-trip training and preparation

• Contingencies ("What to do if" scenarios)

• Appendices: List of contact numbers, Map(s), Bibliography/List of Resources, key research.
