Question 1

As an expert in performance management, you have been asked to design a performance appraisal for the employees of the CFI unit. Discuss:

a. Out of the three possible assessment targets (i.e., traits, behaviors, results) what would be the emphasis in your appraisal? Explain.

b. In their article, Caruth & Humphreys list 11 criteria to judge the quality of a performance appraisal system. Which 2 of these 11 factors would you consider key in the design of a performance appraisal for the CFI unit? Explain

Question 2

If you were Director of the CFI unit, what two actions would be at the core of your management strategy? Explain the theoretical basis of your actions.

Hint: Actions could range from a simple salary raise to more sophisticated ideas (e.g., implement a flat structure). Be creative. The goal is not to assess the action itself, but to observe how you justify the implications of any action. For example, a salary raise can be justified on the basis of Motivation by using Equity theory, or a flat structure can be justified on the basis of Job Satisfaction via the notion of empowerment/flexibility (one of the components of job-satisfaction models).
