I. America is still losing a war that is costing us billions of dollars. I don't mean Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria. We are losing the war on drugs.
II. One of the most popular drugs in our country is marijuana. It is relatively easy to obtain and its use is widespread, particularly in Western regions such as California and Colorado. In fact, medical prescriptions are written for it to relieve discomfort for illnesses such as glaucoma and social anxiety, states ProCon.org. As of this summer, it is legal in 29 states, according to the website Governing.com.
III. Because this is such a polarizing issue, I believe we ought to discuss what merits are conceivable should marijuana be legalized. This is a subject often debated by current and future political leaders.
IV. Today, I want to tell you how money and time are wasted in persecution of those who use marijuana and what benefits are likely to occur should we pursue a change in direction.
