Migration of Legacy Applications and Services to Service-Oriented Architecture

This paper proposes a methodology that may be used for migrating existing legacy applications and services to Service-Oriented Architecture. It discusses the principles of SOA and the motivation behind moving to that system. Benefits of SOA are then listed before the proposed solution to a seamless transition is put forward

Their approach for their proposed system is to analyse the legacy software, redesign the code and then create the SOA services. The methodology used breaks the project into two strands, technological and functional restructuring

The technological restructuring would involve a three tiered approach of separating out the logic, data and user interface. The created services are made available to the Enterprise Service Bus which acts as a layer to be accessed by the top level business process management. They present a diagram of the proposed architecture displaying this transition from legacy apps through the service bus.

The functional restructuring consists of operation identification and grouping of operations into services. This aspect deals with the properties of loosely coupled services and their coarse grained nature.

They conclude that the research proposes a practical solution to migrating legacy applications to SOA. They defined the role of the service bus and how to gain maximum value from the user interface integration into SOA.
