1.Please discussion. Pervasive computing is a world in which almost every single item is basically a computer that is connected to a network either wired or wireless. An example of this is your personal auto. A vehicle now and days runs via a computer chip that monitors the engine and the engine components. If the check engine light comes on, you take the car to your mechanic and he hooks up the cars computer to his diagnostic computer. The diagnostic computer will read all of the fault codes and tell the mechanic where the fault lies. Another computer may monitor gas mileage, a trip computer, tire pressure, and outside air temperature. Some cars offer installed Global Positioning Systems (GPS) with enhanced versions like real time traffic updates that is connected to the internet that will let you know how traffic is flowing for your particular area. Of course the basic feature is still of course point-to-point navigation. I can see a future that will allow the computer to take over driving the car for you, you can just sit back and read the newspaper while the computer drives. It sounds scary but someday it may actually be a reality.
One application of pervasive computing that I think would be a good fit for the market in the upcoming years is ZigBee. ZigBee is a wireless sensor network. ZigBee can handle hundreds of devices at once. One application is using embedded chips on utility meters like electricity. Instead of the electric company meter reader stop and get out of the vehicle at every house, they can just do a drive by and receive the information. The electric company can save a lot of time by doing and hopefully pass on those savings to their customers.
The online article that I discovered compared the societal and cultural aspects of pervasive computing between the U.S. and Japan. For example, e-commerce is lagging in Japan compared to the U.S. because of the japanese preference to do business face-to-face. In America people tend to use the auto more so than in Japan, where most people use public transportation. All of this will impact how business approach differnt areas of the world and carefully study the cultural differences.
In the future, I see pervasive computing becoming smaller. Cell phones and other handheld devices will become even more prevalent and able to operate multiple devices. I believe one handheld device will be able to start your car in the morning, push a button or two and you can start cooking your meal in the microwave while still at work, and then turn on your lights in your house before you come in. Almost everything is in some way considered pervasive computing because so many different things can link to other items to be multifunctional. For example, certain cable companies such as Verizon provide you with a remote to the cable box. This remote can also control your television by simply programming it to connect with your television. If you have internet through that company, you also have the ability to connect to the internet and surf the web through your television with the cable box remote. Another example of pervasive computing is a home security system. A home security system can be programmed to do numerous things at different times. Depending on how complex of a system you have, you will be able to have lights or other appliances turn on and off at certain times to give the perception that someone is home. You can also call emergency contacts through your home security system in case of emergency. Many security systems automatically make a call to the specific company if there is an issue at your home while you are not there. Smart phones are a prime example of pervasive computing. With a smart phone you are able to do just about anything desired. You are able to track your dog through your smart phone, surf the web, check stocks and many other things while be able to do a simple task such as make a phone call or send a text message. Today's technology has had major improvements for living with pervasive computing.
I believe that NI Wireless will gain a major interest in the market acceptance over the next few years. This system is more cost efficient and the installation is also easier because of the wireless capability. NI Wireless will gain a lot of attention because many companies are trying to not only save money but also keep up with current electronics. Many of today's systems are wireless which makes things much simpler with many different aspects.
The example of an application of pervasive computing in the real world that I found is meters, electric meters and smart meters. The article explains how more efficient that smart meters are rather than the meters from the past which were electronic. Smart meters are able to report the usage through a network instead of having an employee physically go to the location to obtain the readings. This makes the company's job much easier and is also more accurate for the customer.
Pervasive computing is a very cost efficient and convenient way to manage things not only in your everyday life, but also at work. There are a lot of tasks that need to be accomplished and through different pervasive computing applications, you are able to perform multiple tasks at once. Companies with save large amounts of money and manpower if they learn to properly utilize the many different applications offered through pervasive computer.
