Choose one of the following prompts, develop a clear thesis statement, and in body paragraphs based on topic sentences that relate to the thesis, provide evidence and arguments to support your thesis. You must write at least three well-developed body paragraphs.

1. To what extent do you consider Oedipus and Dido tragic characters? You may refer to Aristotle’s ideas for a definition of tragic character or provide any appropriate definition that would help you compare these two figures. In comparing them, also provide evidence to support your view that both suffer equally or that one of them is more deserving of your pity.

2. Do you think that fate is responsible for what happens to both Oedipus and Aeneas or do you think that destiny is an outcome of personality? In your essay, provide clear evidence to support thorough analyses of the personalities—including attitudes to others and motivations for leadership—displayed by Oedipus and Aeneas. Also explain why you would make the judgment that they are (or are not) responsible for the different outcomes of their lives.

3. Oedipus’ wife Jokasta and Dido commit suicide. In each narrative, the gods are involved in the events that affect these characters’ lives. Explain why you think that Jokasta and Dido are or are not responsible for their misfortunes. Refer to details from the text to support your views, and to explain why you feel (or do not feel) pity for any of them.
