Occupational Health Problems
Various health problems have been found to be rooted in type of work, equipment and Workplace. It was eighteenth century while definite observations were made that worker suffered by work specific diseases. The occupational diseases were found to have relations with handling of harmful materials, along with irregular or unnatural movements of the body and the environment where the worker worked. In the nineteenth century the industrial revolution brought such types of changes as introduction of inanimate power to replace ban and animal power and as well substitution of machines for people. The steam power which replaced animal power posed new threats of injuries that could at times turn fatal. Introduction of new methods for converting raw materials as well opened risks of injuries and diseases. A far reaching consequence of industrial revolution was organization and specialization of work resultant in division of work.
The specialization not fortunately resulted in boredom and inattentiveness causing raise in workplace accidents. The pioneer efforts in the area of occupational safety were encouraged by specific health problems. Lung problems in coal miners were perceived as main health problem in 1800s. The problem was overcome by giving good ventilation and reducing number of working hours. Though, the problem recurred in the starting of twentieth century both in Great Britain and USA. The resurgence of these problems invited various Governmental and legislative reforms in occupational safety. The coal mining worldwide has posed problems of health and accidents. Roof collapse and flooding has caused many deaths. Efforts by technology, legislation and enforcement are continuously made to create mining operation safe.
