Organizing, Displaying and Describing Data Assignment

Q1. A study was done on survival time for 10 patients following a new treatment for cancer. The time in months was: 24, 8, 12, 3, 20, 18, 24, 19, 27, 25

Find, showing your work, the following. Credit will only be given for complete work leading to the answer.

1. Mean

2. Median

3. Mode

4. Range

5. Variance

6. Standard deviation

Q2. In the following examples which measure of central tendency (mean, median, or mode) is the most appropriate for describing the center of the distribution of measurements? To answer this question, you need to look at the level of measurement and whether the data is skewed.

a. A study was done on survival time for 10 patients following a new treatment for cancer. The time in months was: 24, 8, 12, 3, 20, 18, 24, 19, 27, 25

b. In a study to ascertain which size hospital gown should be purchased (small, medium, or large), a hospital director recorded all the different sizes worn by patients currently in the hospital.

c. In a study on patient satisfaction (Likert-type scale) with a particular nursing procedure, 25 patients were asked to rate the procedure on the scale "very negative", "negative", "neutral," "positive," "very positive."

Q3. A researcher was interested in comparing two techniques for measuring blood pressure. Ten patients received both Method A and Method B. The mean blood pressures for the group were equal for the two methods, while the standard deviation (measurement of dispersion) for the measurement for Method B was twice as large as for those using Method A. Which method would you choose? Why?

Q4. For the following situations, specify the independent and dependent variable being measured AND specify the measurement scale (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio) for each variable. Remember to identify each variable and its level of measurement

Example: A researcher wants to do a research study to study the effect of an exercise program on weight loss.

Independent:  exercise program; level of measurement is nominal

Dependent:  amount of weight lost; level of measurement is ratio

a. A nurse wishes to determine the effect of visual imagery and music therapy on blood pressure of a group of geriatric patients in a long term care facility.

b. In a study of the effect of behavior modification and a twelve step recovery program on newly diagnosed alcoholics, a nurse researcher determined the number of relapse episodes on a group of recovering alcoholics in the Southeast.

c. In a study of the effect of massage therapy on lower back pain, an investigator determined the pain score of the patients after they had a one hour session of deep tissue massage therapy.

d. A nurse researcher wanted to determine the relationship between years of RN experience, specialty certification and hospital acquired urinary tract infections on ICU patients.

e. A nurse educator wanted to determine the relationship between NCLEX prep classes and NCLEX pass rate?

Q5. Using the following information, construct a bar graph, and remember to label both axes of the graph. A clinical psychologist is comparing her net income for the first six months of the year. In January, she made $8,500; in February, $5,000; in March, $2,500; in April, $3,750; in May, $4,500; and in June, $4,900.

Q6. A psychologist studying intelligence tested the intelligence of 30 college psychology students using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (WAIS-III). Following is a table of the full-scale intelligence scores the psychologist obtained:

For the data presented above,

a. Create a table showing intervals, raw, relative frequency, and cumulative frequency distribution of the individual scores. See text, Chapter 2, table 2-1 (Frequency Distribution of Weight Loss) for format of end product. First you need to order and count the raw frequencies.

b. Create a stem-and-leaf plot of the data. See table in your text (2-5) for an example as well as the video in your course material.

Q7. Based on the table you created for response 6 a above, create a frequency distribution graph. Describe the graph's shape and whether you think that it is skewed or not.
