Notions about a particular mental illness

Assignment Problem: Many people cope with mental illness at some point in their lives; those with pervasive mental illness are often marginalized, or viewed as "outsiders." The purpose of this paper is to explore some of your preconceived notions about a particular mental illness. Using the suggested book list (below), select one book that interests you and develop a reaction paper. Then, using your book, outline new facts, ideas, etc. which challenge your preconceptions about that disorder. For example, many people assume those with schizophrenia cannot hold a job, but perhaps the book you chose describes the ups and downs of a young person with a promising job who copes with his symptoms actively.

  • Format: New Times Roman font, size 12
  • Page 1: Title Page (see grading sheet)
  • Page 2: Start your page with the title, centered in the middle of the page (no bold)
  • Paragraph 1- Describe the purpose of the assignment (use above description for clues). Describe the target audience, or who should read it. Then describe why you selected the book. Next, provide a brief overview of the book (e.g., this book describes how a person copes with paranoid schizophrenia).
  • Paragraph 2- Describe preconceived notions you had about this age group and the book theme (e.g., I believed people with schizophrenia were unable to hold jobs, have healthy relationships, parent well, etc.)
  • Paragraphs 3 Select one major thing you learned and provide 3-5 good examples to support this idea. At least 2 of these ideas or facts should come from the book and be supported by research.
  • Paragraphs 4 Select one major thing you learned and provide 3-5 good examples to support this idea. At least 2 of these ideas or facts should come from the book and be supported by research.
  • Paragraphs 5 Select one major thing you learned and provide 3-5 good examples to support this idea. At least 2 of these ideas or facts should come from the book and be supported by research.
  • Paragraph 6 Conclusions.

TIPS:

1. Every paragraph should include a title sentence.

2. Each paragraph should convey one big idea supported by 3-5 facts

3. Write in the past tense- it is easier: "I read the book vs. I was reading the book."

4. Keep sentences short and clear

5. Avoid writing "that"

6. Make sure each sentence has a subject that matches the verb "People with schizophrenia are" vs. people with schizophrenia is"

7. Generally, chose to write about people as plural or singular throughout the whole paper and do not switch back and forth from singular to plural tense-Again, it makes writing easier.
