News report and critical evaluation:
Produce a news report on a topic and for a media form of your choice. This could be, for example, for a print form, broadcast media or blog. You need to think carefully about what context you are choosing this to be produced in, what the constraints may be and what audience you are catering for. There are no limits to the size of the report but when marking we will consider factors such as:
- Structure
- Layout
- Design
- Quality of writing
- Written style
Appropriateness of content for form and audience The critical evaluation (1000 words) should not just be a reflective diary but should be used to consider issues relating to the production of news in relation to your report. For example, you should refer to concepts such as news values, selection, gatekeeping, ideology, bias, visual effects. If you have a created a blog you need to discuss how these concepts are challenged by this new technology. You are encouraged not to be descriptive in detailing the process of production but how the process of production has informed your understanding of theory and practice in making news.
