NEUROGLIA CELLS (Rudolf Virchow, 1846) -
- Occurs in the C.N.S.
- The cells are less than neurons.
- Neuroglia cells are of four types -
(i) Oligodendrocytes - Occurs in both grey & white matter. They have a few fine procells.
(ii) Astrocytes - have a number of processes.
Both are larger, also called macroglia.
(iii) Microglial cells - have small elongated cell bodies.
The cells are phagocytic & accordingly change shape.
Microglial cells are more abundant in grey matter.
(iv) Ependymal cells - They are embryonic cells for other nervous tissue cells / they are often ciliated line the cavities.
