Many of the groups that were target by early 20th century eugenics policies are still the targets of discrimination today, though the form of discrimination has changed. Why is a discussion of eugenics relevant today, AND why is it important for human services professionals to understand this history?
Positive eugenics encourages procreation from those who have desired traits. The idea is to improve the human race with healthy people who do not have any undesired traits such as a disease or some type of defect.
Negative eugenics discourages procreation. It tries to prohibit those who have some type of disease, medical condition or some other undesirable trait such as race or religion by forcing them to be sterilized or euthanasia.
Eugenics is relevant today due to the technology that we have. There is opportunity to correct disabilities through advanced eugenics. However, not everyone wants to be saved by advanced technology. A person with a disability of being deaf or blind may not feel they are less fortunate than those who have these abilities.
