SOCIAL CLASSES

Assignment Description:

Imagine you were trying to assess a person's social class. Answer the following four questions:

• Based solely on his or her appearance, what physical traits would you look for?

• If you were only able to see the person and ask him or her just one question, what question would you ask?

• Why would you ask that particular question?

• Are there any other observations that you could make from an individual's appearance that can provide you with evidence of an individual's social class?

Social class is a group of people who share common lifestyles, same level of education and economic status. These classes can be identified by many ways. Basing our assessment on the appearance of an individual, it is possible to determine the social class of that person (High, middle or low class). (Lambert, 2011).

Low class individuals can only afford low cost clothing made from synthetic fibers. In the United States, Black-Americans are considered to belong to the group of low class. High class individuals are known to purchase expensive clothing and jewels that the middle and the low class are out of reach. They are also well groomed and tidy. (Bagulia, 2007).

If I were to meet an individual I would ask him/her if /she is happy with the division of classes within the American society. This question would be meant to see if he/she supports the idea as this has created a rift between the well to do in the society and the poor who never have anyone who comes to their rescue. This question would drive some sense of how social classes have harmed the less privileged in the society and would enable the highly ranked in the society to look back and help the needy. (In Carlson, & In England, 2011).
