My function for the group consisted of helping with research data for Hispanics women and breast cancer. Why this population is vulnerable for breast cancer and what available resources are available in the Historic Mitchell street neighborhood also I was responsible for researching what financial resources are available for women who are underinsured or no insurance. After obtaining this data present this information on PowerPoint slides that was easy to read and visual appearing.
My first impression of the area was influenced by the crime statistics. I was nervous about venturing into this community where I was an unknown person. Would people see me as a potential victim or a person who's there to surveillance them? It made me uneasy at first until we went into the bakery where the owner welcomed us with opened arms. She was so happy that we picked her bakery to patronized and ask her questions.
The most important thing I've learned from this project is the importance of community service. It's important to engage in community service it provides a service and fulfill needs to those who need it most. It has a positive impact on society I can only imagine what positive changes could occur in the vulnerable communities if these projects are implemented. It could save lives or changed the path of someone's life who's headed in the wrong direction.
