According to Butts and Rich (2015) Nursing philosophy is the way that we as nurses view our field of practice and the patient that we serve. Your nursing philosophy is what guides you in your decision making process. As a Advanced practice Nurse (APN) I plan to take the new information I gain and to add that to my current nursing philosophy.

My current philosophy is remain open minded and treat the patient, not the diagnosis. As a travel nurse my patient population is always changing. And being able to adapt to that change is critical in providing care. What was done to treat a patient in Maine with asthma may not work to treat a patient in North Carolina with the same diagnosis.

I believe you also have to look at all the dynamics of the patient in order to provide proper care. Who are they, what are their personal beliefs, what do they know or believe about their illness, are they managing it alone or do they have a support system. Without this vital information I believe that a true treatment plan can not be achieved.

As an APN I look forward to expanding my nursing philosophy. My new found knowledge will not only help me grow as an APN but as a person s well.

However, I believe that this new knowledge and growth will not change, but affirm my core beliefs of staying open minded and treating the patient and not the diagnosis.
