At the beginning of the story, Montresor identifies three criteria he believes are necessary for revenge to be achieved: He states that he must "not only punish, but punish with impunity"; he continues by saying that "a wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser"; he concludes with the belief that a wrong "is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong."
