1. In his essay, “Monumentality” of 1944, Louis Kahn predicated monumentality on expressive engineering form, both structural and services. How was he able to relate this concept to the Platonic solids which he was compelled to use1952 and 1965.
2. The four texts by Alvar Aalto, included in the course readings (Lecture 11) covering some 20 yearsbetween the early 1930s and the mid-1950s, establish in a reiterative way the organic principles of his architecture. What was Aalto’s overall stance in these essays toward the modernization of environmental culture with regard to the following issues:
(1) neurophysiological criteria
(2) artificial light and air conditioning
(3) standardization and natural materials
(4) brick in relation to concrete
(5) planning regulations
(6) ergonomic methods.
Wherever possible, illustrate these issues with samples of Aalto’s work over the same period.
