Assessment Type: 1500 - 2000 word report - individual assessment

Purpose: This assessment is designed to allow students to develop research and analytical skills, applied to understanding the role of managers and their impact on organisations. This assessment relates to Learning Outcomes a, d and e.

Topic: SMART Objectives and goals - specific companies to compare will be provided in class and via Moodle by the end of week 1.

Task Details: Compare and contrast the two companies in relation to the following:
1. A vision or mission statement.
2. Values of the organisation -
3. Corporate Social Responsibility/Sustainability
4. Stakeholders mentioned in their corporate statements

- The comparisons must include an analysis of these statements as to whether they meet the SMART (Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely) test for objectives and goals.
- Are these statements of intention "believable" and do they add value to these companies?

Assessment 2

Purpose: This assessment is designed to allow students to continue to develop their research and analytical skills, applying the subject theory relating to organisational processes and technologies, to explain how and why real world organisations are managed, and how they respond to changes in the environment. This assessment relates to Learning Outcomes b, d and e.

Topic: Strategic Management within an organisation - the specific organisation will be provided in class and via Moodle by week 3

Task Details: Students are to analyse the given organisation using accepted management theory to support the analysis, and develop answers to the points below into a short report.

1. Briefly trace the development and growth of the organisation from its beginnings to the present through the application of corporate strategies - what types of strategies have these been?

2. There have been many criticisms of the business practices that company has pursued over the years. Describe TWO of these practices and outline the outcomes.

3. Perform an environmental analysis for the involvement of the organisation in the context of the industry it operates in - what are the main opportunities & threats?

4. Describe the organisational culture or leadership style within the organisation.

Assessment 3

Purpose: This assessment is designed to allow students to continue to develop their research and analytical skills, applying the subject theory relating to the relationships between organisations and their stakeholders in terms of social responsibility and managerial ethics. This assessment relates to Learning Outcomes c, d and e.

Topic: Organisational control, responses to environmental change and impacts on stakeholders - the specific organisation to be analysed will be advised in class and via Moodle by week 6.

Task Details: Using the organisation identified and the information provided, students are to analyse the organisation using relevant management theory to support the analysis, and prepare their responses into a 2000- 2500 word short report.

Assessment 4

Assessment Type: Final Exam - individual assessment - closed book exam.Students should bring pens to the exam - no other aids will be permitted

Purpose: The final exam will require students to explain and apply the subject theory to practical situations as would be found in a modern organisation, identifying issues, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations.

The exam may cover materials used in tutorials, class discussions and/or from the readings. This assessment contributes specifically to Learning Outcomes a, b, c, d and e.

Topic: The examination may cover content from any part of the entire subject.

Task Details: 2 hour exam - closed book exam

The exam will consist of a choice of 4 short essay questions out of 6, requiring students to use the subject theories and models to analyse given organisational and management situations, and develop appropriate solutions or recommendations. More details may be given during the trimester.
