The main piece of advice that I would give is to just relax. Starting college at any age is very stressful. You are entering a whole new world of academics, and it is very different than being in high school. According to our textbook, one of the most successful ways to manage stress is through relaxation techniques (Pastorino & Doyle-Portillo, 2022). Different relaxation techniques such as massages, meditation, and yoga allow you to relax your mind and body. The use of relaxation procedures daily has been proven to reduce symptoms of headaches, insomnia, high blood pressure, chronic anxiety, and more. I think it is important to learn how to manage stress and utilize these strategies at a younger age in order to be able to get the most out of your time instead of spending so much time and energy stressing. For preventing stress, I would say to eliminate the perceived stressor. This allows you to experience more control over your environment. One method of coping with stress is the problem-focus approach. This method is aimed to control or alter the environment that is causing stress. This method involves taking steps towards eliminating the stressor. Our textbook gives us the example of Covid-19. Covid was a big stressor to millions of people around the world. In order to eliminate or reduce the stressor we took steps such as wearing masks and washing our hands frequently (Pastorino & Doyle-Portillo, 2022). This method is most commonly used when we believe we can actually do something about the situation we're in. Another method is emotion-focused coping. This method is aimed at controlling your emotional reactions to stress. Stressors activate different emotions such as anxiety, worry, shame, jealousy, and guilt which we experience as unpleasant (Pastorino & Doyle-Portillo, 2022). This method of coping focuses on regulating these unpleasant emotions.
