Metaphase
This is a period of short duration, the chromosomes are at the stage of their maximum condensation and , hence more clearly visible ,Upon each side of their centromeres, a plate or cup like dise ,formed of protein complexes and called kinetochore , appears in the depression of the chromatid of this side the kinetochore of each side is seen to be attached to a bundle of a number ( usually 20 to 40 ) of newly formed spindle fibres called discontinuous , or attachment , or chromosomal , or interzonal spindle fibres . The opposite ends of these fibres are attached to the spindle poles of their respective sides. These fibres pull the scattered chromosomes and align then in a fixed specific manner at the equatorial plane of the spindle forming what is known as the equatorial or metaphase plate.
