Merriam-webster.com defines "lede" as "the introductory section of a news story that is intended to entice the reader to read the full story."
This can also be referred to as a "lead-in" or a "lead." Journalists resurrected the archaic word "lede" because all professions like to have their own shop talk. Read more about that here if you'd like. I am not suggesting that you all become journalists. Rather, my point is to introduce you to a style of writing that you may be able to use in novel ways in the future.
