Assessments such as the WAIS-IV may also provide clinicians with valuable insights into their clients' thinking processes, including how they reason and make decisions (Sternberg, 2007). My stance regarding the use of intelligence testing is that, when used by clinicians, these assessments should be treated as tools to guide diagnosis and treatment, not as an accurate or definitive measure of an individual's intelligence. Despite their reliability and benefits to the therapeutic process, intelligence tests do not fully capture the full measure of human intelligence. As explained by Whitbourne (2025), clinicians need to provide multiculturally competent care to their clients by taking into account the sociocultural factors in their clients' lives; this includes the process of selecting and administering assessments. Some cultural factors may alter how clients perceive assessments, leading to inaccurate scoring and, ultimately, clients not receiving the proper care or diagnosis. For example, some clients may experience language barriers, which can cause them to interpret or answer certain forms of questioning incorrectly.
