Thank you for clarifying the meaning of working within a trauma informed approach. I also appreciate you sharing the Cook and Fye (2023) article, which details the increased possibilities of burnout among counsellors using this approach. It made me think about surgeons, who may normally have one major surgery a day. We should think about it similarly in that uncovering trauma can be likened to a surgical procedure. It is clear from this example that we should place a reasonable limit on the number of clients we take on. As I am very interested in pursuing a practicum using the same approach, I wanted to offer further insight into what it entails. A trauma informed approach emphasizes collaborative relationships, transparency and trustworthiness to minimize the use of control or restraint (Sweeney & Taggart, 2018). Trauma informed counsellors adhere to ethical guidelines and refer clients to evidence-based, trauma-specific supports (Sweeney & Taggart, 2018). For me, one of the most important distinctions is the shift in thinking from: 'What is wrong with you?' to 'What has happened to you?' How do you see this approach fitting in with your practice?
