Height Estimated Project-

You may work alone, or you may work in a group of no more than three members. If you work in a group, you must turn in your individual paper, and list the members of the group.

In this project, you will estimate the height of a tall (more than 10 stories) building or some other tall structure, by creating a tool to measure angles, and by using some of the trigonometry studied in the course.

1. What tall structure did you decide to measure, and why?

2. Describe the tool you used for measuring angles, and describe how you made the tool if you created it yourself.

3. Stand at point A, some unknown distance from the structure, and measure the angle of elevation, a, to the top of the structure. What was the measure of a?

4. Move a certain distanced toward the structure. Now you are at point B. Measure the distance, d, from A to B. What was that distance?

5. From your new spot, B, measure the angle of elevation, β, to the top of the structure. What was the measure of β?

6. Using only the values of d, α and β, estimate the height of the structure. Show all the steps in your calculations, and show relevant diagrams.

7. Research to find the true height of the structure you chose.

8. Describe any difficulties you encountered. Were you satisfied with the accuracy of your results? Explain.
