Problem: I need a response to this discussion post including a question: When I look at marriages within my own extended family, I do notice subtle patterns connected to birth order. Many of the oldest siblings-whether cousins or aunts and uncles-tend to marry partners who are younger-born, which often creates a balance between responsibility-oriented personalities and more easygoing, adaptable ones. In contrast, several of the middle children in my family seem drawn to other middle-born partners, and their relationships often appear cooperative and low-conflict, possibly because both partners grew up negotiating between older and younger siblings. These observations align with research suggesting that firstborns often pair well with later-borns due to complementary traits, while middle-borns may seek partners who share their flexible, peacekeeping style (Salmon & Shackelford, 2011). Birth order also seems to influence marital satisfaction in my family-two firstborns sometimes struggle with shared control, whereas mixed birth-order couples often show smoother communication.
