Manets main objective for painting

I believe Manet's main objective for painting was to shock his audience and Olympia was no exception; as suggested in the reading, viewers at the Salon of 1865 were disturbed by her class, they did not consider her to be a courtesan because her stocky body was more characteristic of the working class; her gaze as opposed to Titian's Reclining Nude was very direct as if awaiting a current customer's approach. I do not believe that Manet's painting would have the same impact on viewers today because today's society is subject to much more vulgarity and obscenity than Manet's paintings possessed.
