Major progress in understanding the brain and behavior

Problem: As a student, how would you respond to this classmate of yours, including in-text citation and references

Addiction is still explained in many different ways, even though science has made major progress in understanding the brain and behavior. This is because addiction is not just one simple disease. Instead, it is a complex condition that develops from a mix of biological, psychological, and spiritual factors working together. Current research shows that no single explanation can fully describe why addiction starts, continues, or affects people differently Kime, K. G. (2018). A big part of understanding addiction is looking at the psychological side. This can include many areas such as how people think, how they manage their emotions, learn from past experiences, deal with trauma, and cope with stress. Psychological models have shown that people may start using substances because they bring relief from emotional pain or stress. Over time, this relief becomes a learned habit that is hard to break. Research also shows that things like confidence in one's ability to change, along with finding motivation and meaning in recovery play a big role in treatment success Kime, K. G. (2018) Treatment may only address the behavior of substance use and not the deeper reasons behind it without considering the psychological factors. Acknowledging spiritual beliefs can allow counselors to be able to better understand a client's values and motivations. When they reach the stage of being ready for treatment, spirituality can complement biological and psychological interventions by supporting long-term recovery if the client is able to have something bigger to believe in and to cling to.
