ERTH Lab Assignment: Earthquakes & Volcanoes
The second part of this lab will be spent investigating volcanoes and earthquakes. You will use your textbook and online resources. Earthquakes and volcanoes are the result of plate tectonics. Earthquakes and volcanoes have the ability to completely change the face of the earth, sometimes within a matter of seconds. The morc we know about these amazing natural occurrences, the better.
1. What are the two different types of body waves used in seismic studies? Give their names and define them.
2. The focus of an earthquake is.
3. From a measure of ground motion activity, or Peak Ground Acceleration, does western Kentucky or central Wyoming have more of a seismic hazard?
4. List two primary effects of earthquakes.
5. List four secondary effects of earthquakes. Elaborate and explain ONE of them.
6. A friend of yours asks you about the interior of the earth, and you tell them all about the separate regions, and the surface versus the inner core. They ask you, "How do we know the outer core is liquid?" what would your response be?
7. Is there ever a situation in which an earthquake would occur, without volcanic activity? Explain your answer for full credit.
