A recycle warehouse operation task prior to abatement involves workers who unload large bails of recycled paper and cut off heavy wire wrappings with bolt cutters. The wires are pulled off the bails; the workers use gloves to firmly grip the wires but must tug and yard on the rope to remove it from the recycled paper bale. Often they are working in awkward position to free the wire band from the bale. Once the wire is removed a fork lift is used to push the paper onto conveyor belts that dump the paper into tornado pulpers where a slurry is made. Medical records report work-related injuries for approximately 20 percent of the 20 workers and a survey of all workers indicates various CTD-related symptoms.
