Chapter 19: Childhood and Adolescent Mental Health Issues
Seeing children with mental disorders is heartbreaking. Often, these children are on a path to a lifetime of struggles. One of the problems for children is that diagnosis of mental disorders is often delayed because of parental denial of the problem.
Think about children you have seen with some of the disorders discussed in this chapter.
a) What were the early signs that they had problems?
b) Research what was the initial response. Was there a delay in diagnosis and treatment?
c) List one therapeutic intervention that a nurse could provide to a parent that is in denial.
d) List one form of treatment that can assist the child.
