List and explain steps taken to evaluate performance

Problem

Jordan resumed at his new job at Amazon Fulfilment Centre, Barrhaven, Ottawa in November 2022 and after two days of intense general training which focused on the health and safety rules guiding the operations of all members of staff at the warehouse, he was put on the Pick to Tote team to work as a picker. The specific details about working on the Pick to Tote team were adequately relayed to him, with the key performance indices which will be used in assessing his performance unambiguously outlined. After this was done, he was trained on how to successfully perform on the job.

At the start of his second week at Amazon, Jordan began to work fully on the Pick to Tote team and due to his performance at the job right from the start, it was obvious to the Manager and the Supervisor that he is a good fit for the job as his picking rate was very impressive and he was always punctual to work. It is important to state that Jordan never missed any of his shifts and his colleagues at work seem to be endeared to him as they always feel very comfortable conversing with him before the shift begins and also when they are on break. Furthermore, it was noted that Jordan hardly makes mistakes while carrying out his duties as he always does his due diligence by paying attention to details. Another impressive thing about Jordan is the fact that he is never shy or scared to request help from the supervisors and from his co-workers whenever he needs one. For example, there was a day Jordan hurriedly requested the help of a co-worker when he needed to pick a heavy product from the cart so as not to damage the product and the co-worker obliged him. Jordan also dresses appropriately to work everytime and never violates the dressing protocols of the warehouse as he is always seen on his safety shoes, reflective jacket, and gloves whenever he is on duty.

Jordan has been very impressive with most things that concerns being successful as a picker in the Pick to Tote team, however, there are some concerns regarding his application of the necessary safety measures that are required for the picking job. It is important to state that to ensure their own safety and the safety of their coworkers, all employees are required to adhere to the safety procedures guiding all operations. Jordan has been found violating the safety protocol that guides pickers in the warehouse. For instance, Jordan has been caught a number of times trying to tip-toe to reach an item he is to pick on the cart, which is above his shoulders. This is wrong as every picker has a ladder in their respective workstations and the safety guidelines require every picker to make use of the ladder whenever they are to pick items above their shoulders from the cart. Also, Jordan has been seen on camera bending instead of kneeling on one knee whenever he is to pick items below his waist, and this clearly violates the safety guidelines guiding the pickers at Amazon.

Jordan has been on the job for three months and the Manager and the Supervisor have deemed it fit to conduct an appraisal on Jordan's performance on the job so far. The performance appraisal is to relay to Jordan, his areas of strength and his areas of weakness while carrying out his duties. The performance appraisal meeting would involve Jordan, a member of the HR team, the Pick to Tote team Manager and the Supervisor. The rationale behind having all these parties in the appraisal meeting are as follows:

I. Jordan, who is the employee whose performance is being appraised needs to be present at the meeting so as to answer questions pertaining to the appraisal and also provide feedback..

II. The presence of a member of the HR team is needed so as to ask questions pertaining to Jordan's overall wellbeing, especially as it concerns his level of satisfaction with the job and also his career plans. The HR team member is also required to ask Jordan what he feels can be done to improve his level of productivity.

III. The Manager is to outline the areas of strength of Jordan's work and commend him for his performance. The Manager is to unambiguously state the areas of Jordan's work that need to be improved upon.

IV. The Supervisor's presence is needed at Jordan's performance appraisal meeting to give an assessment on specific details of Jordan's work. For example, Jordan's average picking rate per hour could be made known to him by the supervisor. This would make him know what his numbers are in that regard and subsequently spur him to perform even better.

Finally, it is imperative to state that a performance improvement plan would be agreed upon by all parties at this performance appraisal session so as to further enhance Jordan's performance on the job.
