Reflect: Good research is a combination of many types of sources. Prior to taking this course, did you understand the differences between these sources and the importance of finding one type of resource over another?

Write: For this discussion, you will address the following prompts:

• Explain at least five differences between popular and scholarly sources used in research.

• Locate and summarize one peer-reviewed, scholarly source from the Ashford University Library and one popular source that pertain to your Final Argumentative Essay topic.

In your summary of each article, comment on the following: biases, reliability, strengths, and limitations.

• From the sources you summarized, list and explain at least five visual cues from the peer-reviewed, scholarly source that were not evident in the popular source.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length, which should include a thorough response to each prompt.

You are required to provide in-text citations of applicable required reading materials and/or any other outside sources you use to support your claims. Provide full reference information of all sources cited at the end of your response.

Global Societal Issues

The two societal issues that I have selected is minimum wage and refugee (escaping persecution, war, or death). I chose these two topics because they have been the topic of discussion for the United States. Recently, minimum wage was a huge factor amongst individuals who are in the fast food industry.

The Ashford Library has several articles about minimum wage and the refugee crisis that will be great for an argumentative essay. The refugee crisis is a very broad topic based on several countries. I have chosen to narrow it down to the current issues that occur in Australia and New Zealand.

When I think about minimum wage the cost of living also comes to mind. Depending on the state the individual minimum wage is not enough to run a household. "Based on the Department of Labor increasing minimum wage up to $12.00 per hour that will only be beneficial for individuals 20 years or older with fifty six percent of them being women" (DOL,2016 par. 1).

There had been an overtime law passed effective December 1, 2016. This law allows workers to receive time in a half for overtime, a raise in salary, and not to have a limit of forty hours of work a week (DOL,2016 par 3). This law will not allow workers to grow within the company because they will not want to make those changes.

The article from the Ashford Library by International Review stated, "Few of the migrants and the refugees wanted to come to Australia" (Neumann 2016 par. 3). The refugees became displaced, so war had to begin in Australia, New Zealand, and the Federal Republic of Germany. The migrants from these countries are consisted to have a problem.
