List and describe the five rights of drug administration

Problem

Background

Any time a patient needs a drug (medication), the person administering the drug is legally liable if an error occurs. A radiologic technologist (RT) may administer a drug under the order of a physician or radiologist. The most common drug administered in radiology is contrast media. Because all medications are potentially harmful, it is important the RT be knowledgeable of the standard safety precautions in drug administration. Along with those precautions, there are "Five Rights" of drug administration that technologists need to follow. It is also the responsibility of the RT to know about special considerations for specific patient populations.

Task

Research the topic of drug administration in radiology and find the names of common drugs administered by radiologic technologists. Look for all precautions and safety measures presented, and any pertinent information found for all medications.

Use your research and in a 1-page (minimum) paper, spelling/grammar, address the following:

i. Explain the standard safety precautions of drug administration.
ii. List and describe the "Five Rights" of drug administration.
iii. Discuss some special patient considerations when administering drugs.
iv. Be sure to provide References page documenting any resources you used.
