This question has to do with the dissolving of the CO2 into the water contained in basalt. The amount of water in a given volume of basalt varies with the depth in a way we can measure. We need to know how much carbon dioxide the water in a region can hold.

Specifically: we consider the region serviced by a borhole (the "injection region") to be a circular cylinder of radius 5 metres, and height 800 nietres. In our study area we measure the volume of water trapped within a cubic metre of rock at a depth h metres to be 0.1 + (0.9 x 10^-4)b cubic metres. At the relevant temperatures and pressures, a cubic metre of warn will hold 1.45 kilograms of carbon dioxide in solution.

We would like to know how imiany kilograms of carbon dioxide we can expect the water in the injection region to hold.
