Assessment 1 - Criticial Review Exercise

- Choose a published, academic journal article on a contemporary leadership issue from the list provided (7 pdf files of each article provided/attached with email);

Students are required to:

- Choose a published, academic journal article on a contemporary leadership issue from the list below (see p2 and Moodle for pdf files of each article).
- Write a critical (describe and analyse)review of the article (2000 words ± 10%).

Article Critique:
1. Introduction-Include the purpose of the research, type of research (e.g. exploratory, descriptive, causal), a brief overview of the article,and the significance of the study.

2. Body-Critically discuss the sections of the article. Specifically, focus on leadership theory/principles/models/research, and implications for leadership theory and for organisational practice.Sections of the article that could be critiqued include:

- Problem Area;Problem Statement.
- Variables;Conceptual/Theoretical model;Research Question(s)and/orResearch Hypotheses.
- Data CollectionMethods i.e. how were data collected e.g. interviews, questionnaire? Describe the sample size and sample selection methods. Identify the measures (if applicable) i.e. what instruments were used to gather data? Provide a brief description only.
- Data Analysis i.e. what data analysis techniques were used? Provide a brief description only.
- Discussion and Implications i.e. What were the research findings? What were the implications for leadership theory and/or leadership in organisational practice? Do you agree/disagree with the implications for leadership in organisational practice? Why/Why not?

3. Personal Learnings- Comment on your personal insights and learnings in relation to leadership theories/principles/models/research and organisational application stemming from this critique.

4. Conclusion-Write an overall conclusion to the critique.

References - Need to conform to the American Psychological Association (APA) requirements. Where applicable, author(s) name(s), journal title/book title, chapter title/article title, year of publication, volume number/issue number and the pagination must be present. Use of DOI is highly encouraged.

Appendices - include additional information as necessary and make sure it is referred to within the text.

Report Structure and Format:
- Include a title page that includes a title, unit name and number, student number.
- You do not need to include an abstract.
- Youdo need to include a Table of Contents that includes headings/subheadings and page numbers.
- The report should be formatted according to accepted academic requirements for formal written work i.e. text should be in Times New Roman, 12pt, double-spaced. All page margins need to be 2.54 cm.Include page numbers in the footer of the document.
- Use of headings and subheadings is highly encouraged to help structure your review.

Students are required to:
Write developed report of 3000 words ± 10% (not including title page, references, notes, figures, and tables) that includes:
- Identification of a currentissue/challenge/problem in your organisation related to leadership.
- Evidence of the impact the issue/challenge/problem is currently having on the organisation e.g., performance, teamwork, organisation culture, people etc.
- An evidence-based justification for topic selection.
- Use of leadership theories, principles, research, and models to:
o Analyse the factors/organisation environmental conditions/people contributing to the issue/challenge/problem.
o Diagnose the root cause of the issue/challenge/problem.
o Discuss how/why effective leadership is integral to resolving the issue/challenge/problem.
o Propose, contrast, and evaluate alternative leadership-based recommendations for resolving the issue/challenge/problem.
o Justifya recommend a leadership-based solution to solve the issue/challenge/problem.
o Outline and explain the benefits to the organisation that may stem from the implementation of the recommended solution.

Propose and evaluate alternative leadership-based recommendations for resolving the issue/challenge/problem.Justify your recommended solution with evidence. Identify anticipated benefits that will result from implementing recommended solution.
