The plan: Students will submit a plan of between 400 and 500 words for the final essay, including a short bibliography of four sources. The plan should be in full sentences, not bullet points. The structure of your plan and order of your points should reflect the order and structure of your essay.

Sources for the plan: At least two of your sources will be an essential reading from the unit. At least one source will be a peer reviewed journal article which is not an essential reading for the course. You may also wish to include sources that are primary or secondary material on a health campaign or regulatory change. This last source may be academic writing, a newspaper article or website. You will be expected to have read all four sources. Full and accurate referencing will be expected to ensure your tutor can assess the quality and appropriateness of your sources.

Marking criteria for plan:

• Demonstrated critical engagement with key arguments around “health” and normalization within the unit
• Demonstrated awareness of the relationship between forms of knowing and experiences of embodiment
• Considered and effective organisation of argument
• Clarity of communication
• Evidence of independent research within the discipline to support the argument
• Accurate and appropriate use of referencing

Option A:

Take an example of an initiative intended to enhance health. You may choose one of the following:

– a health education or health promotion campaign, pursued by government or by a lobby group or community group
– a legal or regulatory change intended to enhance health

Select at least three of the following terms: medicalization, demedicalisation, risk, normalisation and biopower

How can these concepts of be used to understand your selected campaign or change?

You should consider some or all of the following:

– the way the campaign was developed – who was involved, who was excluded
– the nature of the campaign or change – the activities, documents, language, images, audio-visual materials, practices it includes
– the implementation of the campaign or change
– responses to the campaign or change by the public, professional and community groups, institutions or governments
– the health identities offered by, shaped by, or developed in reaction to the campaign or change

You can structure the Option A answer as a conventional essay or if you prefer it can be structured like a report with separate subsections addressing each of your chosen terms and/or dimensions of the campaign or change.
