Problem:
My dissertation topic focuses on "Juvenile Justice Staff Experiences of Trauma-Informed Care Training Gaps in Alaska Detention Facilities". The revised problem statement guiding this study is that juvenile justice staff in Alaska detention facilities may lack adequate trauma-informed care training, which limits their ability to respond effectively to trauma-affected youth and may contribute to inconsistent or punitive practices. This issue is particularly meaningful to me because, in my role as a juvenile justice counselor in a boys' detention facility, I regularly witness how trauma histories shape youth behavior and how staff often struggle to respond without sufficient training or support. My professional experience has shown me that even well-intentioned staff can feel unprepared when trauma-related behaviors escalate, which reinforces the need to understand how training gaps affect daily practice. The significance of this problem extends beyond individual staff experiences; it has implications for youth safety, rehabilitation, and equitable treatment, especially given the high prevalence of adverse childhood experiences among Alaska's juvenile population.
Throughout the dissertation process, I will rely extensively on Walden's Doctoral Capstone Resources to ensure that my work meets the university's expectations for scholarly rigor and structure. One essential takeaway from completing Walden's AI Essentials tutorial for Students was the emphasis on using AI tools responsibly and ethically. The tutorial highlighted that while AI can support brainstorming, organization, and clarity, students must ensure that all academic work reflects their own critical thinking, original analysis, and scholarly voice (Walden University, n.d.-d). This reminder is especially important during the dissertation process, where academic integrity and methodological rigor are foundational to producing credible and meaningful research.
