It is only in the last 25 years that innovation has really started to take seriously as a company wide structure. Before that it existed among the employees but was not fostered, maintained, or even recognized very often. It did exist in various groups, like the R&D Department, but not in the organization as a whole. I personally believe that technology has played a large part in this.
