The American Red Cross is an organization that is widely regarded as a friend with strong humanitarian credentials.Its relief efforts in places such as New Orleans, Haiti and Indonesia do generate both international and local support.However, it is also clear that the Red Cross faces serious challenges in developing countries embroiled in conflict. It is not surprising that its workers are threatened or even harmed by warring factions who do not always recognize the principles and conventions of international law.
