It is desired to determine the power requirement of the

Problem -

In a butane liquefaction plant, n-butane gas at 25oC and 1.0 atm is fed at the rate of 1800 mol/h to an adiabatic compressor where its pressure is raised to 20.0 atm with an isentropic efficiency of η (= 0.75) relative to the reversible process. After leaving the compressor, the butane vapor stream goes to a water-cooled condenser where it is condensed to liquid n-butane at 40oC and 20 atm. The condenser is a countercurrent heat exchanger with butane stream flowing on the hot side at 20 atm and water flowing on the cold side at 1 atm. Water enters the heat exchanger at 20oC and leaves at a temperature not to exceed 40oC.

It is desired to determine:

(a) the power requirement of the compressor,

(b) the temperature of the butane stream leaving the compressor,

(c) the heat duty of the heat exchanger and the mass flow rate of the cooling water, given that the specific heat of water is 1.0 kcal/(kgoC), and the

(d) the heat transfer area needed for the heat exchanger, given that the overall heat transfer coefficient for the heat exchanger may be assumed to be 300 kcal/(m2.h.oC).
