It has been decided to use an approximate grid of 375metres

AIMS:

1.   to introduce BS5950 Structural use of steelworkin building.

2.   to provide a basic working knowledge of thesizing of simple structural elements in structural steelwork.

TASK: To produce an economic design for a structural steelwork beam and column.

It has been decided to use an approximate grid of 3.75metres by 6.75 metres for an office building, which is to includefacilities for general filing and storage space.

Because of the difficulties with procuring specialist labour, the Client wishes to examine the utilisation of a structuralsteelwork solution for the frame. Both the first floor and theroof are to be provided by precast concrete units.

Student tasks:-

1.   Undertake preliminary calculations inorder tosize economically a typical first floor internal beam.

2.   Undertake preliminary calculations inorder tosize economically a typical internal column. from foundations toground floor.

Assume the column to be axially loaded with partial restraint inboth axes at ground floor, first floor and roof level.

For the purposes of undertaking preliminary calculations, assumea height from foundations to first floor of 4.25 metres

The structural steelwork frame is to designed inSIMPLE CONSTRUCTION in accordance with BS 5950,that is stability is to be provided by shear walls.

Loading Information :-

Imposed loading 3.0 kN/sqm

60mm concrete screed to roof slabs and first floor

200mm precast concrete units - 4.50 kN/m2

Ceiling load, plaster and services to first floor -1.25 kN/m2

First floor lightweight partitions - 1.00kN/m2
