LEARNING OUTCOMES:

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

1- Understand the key theoretical concerns and conceptual issues underpinning studies on the history of childhood

2- Have knowledge of differences, similarities and (dis)continuities between the experience and nature of childhood as between (and/or running through) historical periods – taking gender differences into account in all cases

3- Have some knowledge of the nature of childhood as between different countries (in the 20th century) and different social classes and cultures – taking gender differences into account

4- Analyse concepts, theories and perspectives on childhood in historical context

5- Demonstrate effective communication and engagement with participants in the context of an oral history project

6- Apply knowledge of differing social constructions of childhood through time – with reference to gender and social class

7- Reflect on their own values, attitudes and experience in relation to changes in the nature and social constitution of ‘childhood’

8- Utilise research skills involved in oral history

9- Communication skills: Express, discuss and present knowledge, ideas and viewpoints orally and in writing on the subject of childhood

10- Manage the learning process: in relation to the oral history project, including setting their own targets for the completion of the project and taking responsibility for its organisation

11- Information skills: identify and collect relevant information efficiently and effectively and organise it into academic products in assignment form.
